Naps At The Barbershop

Barbershops are my top 3 places to take naps. But not today.

Because today is the first time my son is getting a haircut on his own. And daddy feels a little bit worried.

I remember the last time we were here, I had to hold him still while the razor ran through his ticklish nape. Then he would laugh hard and move his head away. I can’t remember how many times I said, “Sit still. Kuya is holding scissors.”

But today, he sat down like a big boy. And for the next 10 minutes, all I heard was scissor clicks and razor buzz.

So I took this photo as a visual reminder.

That one day, our child will start doing things on their own. And they won’t be needing daddy or mommy anymore.

One day, they’ll pick their own clothes.

Go out with their own friends.

And maybe choose their own hairstyle. (because daddy’s haircut is so mid).

And I think that’s a good thing. Because growing up means being independent.

But here’s the lesson for us parents.

While we let our kids become more independent by doing things on their own, we ourselves should learn how to be more God-dependent by entrusting them fully to God.

As stewards, our main job is to point them to God.

Let go and let God.

And one day, they'll grow up to become the person that God has prepared them to be.

For now, I’ll just try to calm myself as I sit at the barber’s chair watching my son behind the large mirror.

The next time we come back for a haircut, hopefully I’ll be able to relax and take a nap just like before.
