We Walk To School Every Morning

When I drive my son to school, we don’t park right in front of the entry gate. Instead, we drive a few more meters away to park our car a little farther. From there we’ll take our short “morning walk” going to school.

It’s a 100 meter walk and takes around 5 minutes, including a few stopovers along the way.

It all started one particular day when we got to school earlier than usual. Since we had time to spare, I parked the car far from the school gate and told him we'll have a short morning walk.

And he loved it!

The next day, he asked if we could do another morning walk.

We did. And from there on it became a daily habit.

I admit parking far from the school just to walk sounds silly at first. And when you’re running late for class, a detour doesn’t sound like a good idea.

But I guess kids have their own definition of "trip" that we grown-ups can enjoy as well.

It also taught me an important lesson.

Sometimes God allows life detours that keep us from reaching our goals- A crisis. An urgent need. A failure.

But detours are God’s way of molding us, preparing us, pruning us before we get to where He wants us to be.

Godly detours do not change the destination, rather it’s supposed to change us.

So when the time is right, we come out as better versions of ourselves.

I guess life is never meant to be lived in a straight line. There will be twists and turns and lots of detours.

And all we can do is prepare.

So tomorrow, maybe we’ll leave the house a little earlier so we can have our daily morning walk.

And hopefully we won’t be late for school.
